The Marine Animals We Are Losing and Why That Should Scare Us More

Let’s talk about marine animals that are literally vanishing while we scroll on our phones.

I know that sounds dramatic, but it is true. There are so many endangered sea creatures that people either do not know about or just do not take seriously.

Like the vaquita. It is a tiny porpoise found only in the Gulf of California and there are maybe ten of them left. Ten.

Then there is coral. It is not just pretty ocean decor. Coral reefs are entire ecosystems and they are dying fast because of rising sea temperatures, pollution, and overfishing. No coral means no reef fish. No reef fish means the whole food chain gets thrown off.

There are sea turtles eating plastic bags. Whale populations shrinking. Sharks being hunted for their fins. It is all happening and most of us never see it because it is underwater and out of sight.

But just because we do not see it does not mean it is not real. I think the ocean feels so distant to people that they forget we are actually connected to it. It gives us oxygen. It regulates climate. It is home to thousands of species we have not even discovered yet.

I care about this stuff because it is disappearing. And it makes me feel a little helpless sometimes. But talking about it is something. Learning about it is something. And maybe if more people cared, it would not be disappearing so fast.

With love and good health,
